Low Carbon builds towards strategic goals with recertification of B-Corp status

Achieving B-Corp recertification demonstrates the company’s commitment to the highest social and environmental performance

Thursday 2 November 2023 – Global renewable energy company Low Carbon has announced that it has successfully recertified as a registered B Corp organisation, a major milestone and endorsement of Low Carbon’s ethos as a purpose-led company.

Low Carbon was one of the first renewable energy companies to achieve B Corp status and with its recertification has significantly increased its rating score by 20% from 97 to 117.

It follows a long journey of continuous improvement which has involved measuring the company’s entire social and environment performance including business structure, supply chain efforts and performance management systems.

Each recertification will help Low Carbon to strengthen the consistency and breadth of its environmental and social performance, which is essential as it continues to grow rapidly and benefit from being committed to a best practice standard which is set by the market, stakeholders and environmental interests.

B Corporations (or B Corps) are a growing community of certified companies who are reinventing business, by legally committing to consider their social and environmental impact as well as financial return. B Corp companies are required to recertify every three years.

To be eligible for B Corp status, companies must achieve a B Impact Assessment score of over 80 – in line with B Lab’s rigorous certification process. The higher the score the higher the positive impact on employees, community, customers and the environment.

Commenting on its recertification, founder and Chief Executive of Low Carbon, Roy Bedlow said: “Recertifying our B Corp status is key to our strategic goals of achieving net zero across the business and delivering 20GW of renewable energy by 2030. Our mission is to protect the planet for future generations and this is reaffirmed by the significant increase in our score.”

Head of Sustainability and ESG at Low Carbon, Harriet Parker added: “As a B Corp we are accountable to all our stakeholders and the environment, ensuring we balance profit with purpose. We are delighted to achieve this latest milestone which demonstrates Low Carbon’s firm commitment to meeting the highest standards of social and environmental impact across the entire business.”

In 2022 Low Carbon was recognised as one of the world’s leading B Corps for environmental impact. The Best for the World™ list includes B Corps whose verified B Impact Scores in the five impact areas evaluated in the B Impact Assessment rank in the top 5% of all B Corps in their corresponding size group.
