ITM is a not-for-profit organisation established in 1956 to support the business travel and meetings industry. Our main activities extend to promoting best practice, benchmarking and the development of individual and collective expertise through a structured education and research programme.
As an organisation which represents over 1,000 travel and meetings buyers and suppliers, we recognised there was a requirement to implement a programme of change to cause a reduction in emissions and create greater sustainable development of the travel and meetings management market.
Project ICARUS was established in 2006, initially to promote carbon reduction in travel management programmes throughout the UK business travel industry. The project is led by, and targeted primarily at national and international travel and meetings buyers/managers as we believe that any movement to reduce carbon emissions needs to be focused on this community.
The project also seeks to address other areas of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in the world of travel and meetings management, and works across economic and social aspects of company behaviour within travel and meetings programmes as well as environment.
